Loches is a medieval riverside town on the banks of the Indre River in Centre Val-de-Loire. The town is steeped in history with lots to see and do including a lovely array of local shops that offer a taste of French culture. The town has a bustling market and several authentic boutique shops that are a delight to visit for simply browsing or for shopping up a storm.

Here’s our selection of the best shops to visit during a trip to Loches.

  • Grain de Malice, 1 Balzac Street

This charming boutique sells a range of women’s clothing and accessories. A great choice if you’re looking to inject a little bit of French style to your outfit.

  • Boulangerie La Parisienne, 4 Rue Picois

The smell of fresh hot croissants will guide you into this delightful patisserie. Once inside, be sure to try the artisanal chocolates which make a great gift to take home with you.

  • JR Deco, 8 Rue Agnés Sorel

This boutique workshop makes and sells a range of pretty and artistic objects all made from recycled materials. Worth a visit when looking for something a little bit unusual.

  • Mure Miel Boutique, 8 Place de l’Hôtel de ville

This pretty shop is a treasure trove of beautiful homeware goods and gifts. You’re sure to find something for yourself as well as a few gifts to take home with you.

  • Confiserie Hallard, 62 Av. A. Briand

Another great option for those with a sweet tooth. The shop manufactures lollipops, sweets and all kinds of delicacies (nougats, pasta, pralines, nougatines) by melting the sugar and mixing it with natural flavours.

  • Loches Market, Town Centre

This large traditional French market is a delight to the senses. The town comes alive each week on a Wednesday and Saturday morning and offers a vast selection of local goods including cheese, meat, flowers, clothes, accessories, soaps and much more. There is a vibrant and fun atmosphere throughout the town on market day and it is well worth a visit for soaking up some French culture.

The town of Loches is the location of the Stein Study French Boarding School Programme that offers Irish students a unique opportunity to improve their French in a fully French environment.
